FAQ

Tips

Here are some tricks!

1. Warm the Washer with a Hairdryer
• Set your hairdryer to a low heat setting.
• Hold the washer (the backing piece of the safety eye) a few inches away from the hairdryer nozzle.
• Gently warm the washer for a few seconds until it becomes slightly more flexible.
• Be cautious not to overheat the plastic to prevent deformation or damage.

This method is recommended by Theodore and Rose, who suggest that gently warming the washer makes it more flexible, making it easier to snap into place—especially with smaller washers.

2. Use a Heated Crochet Hook to Enlarge Stitch Holes
• Select a crochet hook slightly larger than the one used for your project.
• Warm the metal part of the hook by placing it near a heat source, such as a hairdryer, for a few seconds.
• Carefully insert the warmed hook into the stitch where you plan to place the safety eye, gently stretching the hole.
• This temporary enlargement allows the safety eye’s post to pass through more easily.

Try using progressively larger crochet hooks to enlarge the stitches before attaching the eyes, ensuring the stem of the safety eye can be pushed through the stitch pattern without damaging your work.

Safety Precautions
• Always handle heated tools with care to avoid burns.
• Test the temperature on a scrap piece of yarn to ensure it doesn’t cause damage.
• Avoid direct contact between the heat source and your crochet project to prevent singeing or melting of fibers.

By applying gentle heat to the plastic components or using warmed tools, you can make the process of attaching safety eyes to your crochet creations more manageable and secure.
